The Demand for Punishment*

چکیده
7 While many experiments demonstrate that behavior differs from the predictions of traditional economic 8 theory, they have not shown that economic reasoning is necessarily incorrect. Instead, these experiments 9 illustrate that the preferences of homo economicus have been mis-specified. Modeled with social preferences, 10 it may be rational for agents to forego material gains. Social dilemmas are examples in which punishment 11 is not credible and yet people often pay to reprimand other participants. At the same time, we show that 12 these people also react to changes in the price of punishing and income as if punishment was an ordinary 13 and inferior good. 14 © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Do non-strategic sanctions obey the law of demand? The demand for punishment in the voluntary contribution mechanism
The prospect of receiving a monetary sanction for free riding has been shown to increase contributions to public goods. We ask whether the impulse to punish is unresponsive to the cost to the punisher, or whether, like other preferences, it interacts with prices to generate a conventional demand curve. We test the price responsiveness of the demand for punishment by randomly varying the cost of...
متن کاملThe Value of Vengeance and the Demand for Deterrence
Humans will incur costs to punish others who violate social norms. Theories of justice highlight 2 motives for punishment: a forward-looking deterrence of future norm violations and a backward-looking retributive desire to harm. متن کاملEmotion expression in human punishment behavior.
Evolutionary theory reveals that punishment is effective in promoting cooperation and maintaining social norms. Although it is accepted that emotions are connected to punishment decisions, there remains substantial debate over why humans use costly punishment. Here we show experimentally that constraints on emotion expression can increase the use of costly punishment. We report data from ultima...
